U.K. supermarket giant expands self-scanning service

9/6/2016

Tesco wants to help its customers check out faster.

The retailer has expanded its “Scan as you Shop” self-scanning program to 20 new locations — a move that makes the service available in a total of 350 stores.

The proprietary handheld device allows customers to scan products as they move throughout store aisles, and keeps a tally of how much they are spending. Integrated with Tesco’s manned and self-checkout point-of-sale (POS) terminals, shoppers have more options to tender and bag orders “in a matter of seconds,” according to a Tesco spokesperson.

“We want to make it as easy as possible for customers to shop with us,” the representative added. “Scan as You Shop is already used by over 600,000 customers every week, and not only saves time at the checkout, it enables customers to track their spending as they go.”

Based on this expansion, the chain offers the most self-checkout devices across the United Kingdom, according to a company statement.
