Tesco sales up 5.7% in quarter

London Tesco PLC on Tuesday reported a 5.7% increase in sales in its third quarter, lower than analysts expected.

In the 13 weeks ending Nov. 28, Tesco said sales excluding gasoline were up 6.6% on a constant currency basis. Sales outside the company's United Kingdom base rose 5.4% at constant exchange rates and 12% at actual exchange rates.

The company did not report third-quarter earnings figures in the update.

In the United States, Tesco reported a 37% jump in sales as it continued expanding and developing its Fresh & Easy stores.

In the United Kingdom, same-store sales rose 2.8%.
