The chief executive of a regional supermarket chain ranks among the nation's highest-rated CEOs.

Charles C. Butt, CEO of H-E-B, based in San Antonio, Texas, was the only retail chief executive to crack the top 20 of Glassdoor's annual Employee Choice Awards, which honor the 100 highest rated CEOs of large companies across the United States. Butt ranked #16. (The number one position was held by Benno Dorer, CEO of Clorox.)

Other retail CEOs who made the 2017 list include Chet Cadieux III, QuikTrip (#28); Calvin McDonald, Sephora (#45); Peter Agnefjall, Ikea (#58); Hubert Joly, Best Buy (#77); Jerry Stritzke, REI (#86); Davie Wenig ,eBay (#87); Craig Jelinek, Costco Wholesale (#88); and Katrina Lek (#100), Stitch Fix.

Three restaurant CEOs also cracked the top 100. Cheesecake Factor's David Overton ranked #34, In-N-Out Burger's Lynsi Snyder was #36, and Dan Cathy of Chick-fil-A ranked #37.

Among the more than 700,000 employers reviewed on Glassdoor, the average CEO approval rating is 67%. H-E-B's Butt had a 97% approval rating.

The Glassdoor Employees’ Choice Awards are based on the input of employees who voluntarily provide anonymous feedback, by completing a company review, about their CEOs leadership, along with insight into their job, work environment and employer over the past year.

When employees submit reviews about their employer on Glassdoor, they are asked to rate several factors tied to their employment experience, including sentiment around their CEO’s leadership, in addition to rating workplace attributes like senior management, among others. Specifically, when rating their CEO on Glassdoor, employees are asked to report whether they approve, disapprove or are neutral about the job their CEO is doing.
