Sundance is gearing up for retail expansion with a new prototype that speaks to its Western roots and brand heritage.
The artisan-inspired design, by JGA, Southfield, Michigan, which also provided architectural services, showcases the artistry, design and materiality of the unique products that make up the Sundance collection, which is also available via catalogs and online. (Sundance was founded by Robert Redford in 1969.) The design emphasizes the natural characteristics and finishes of materials, while minimizing the processing and manufacturing aspects. The handmade character, the natural patina and finish inherent in the materials have been intentionally left “as-is” throughout the store.
Soft and focused residential-like lighting provides a warm and intimate glow, A mixture of woods reclaimed with residual paint and weathering, patina copper, and oiled metals, are juxtaposed to create a palette that is textural and diverse.
The cash-wrap, which is highlighted by a collection of photographs from the company’s archives, including the Robert Redford quote that that outlines the philosophy and commitment of the Sundance experience: "Sundance is and will always be a dream being carefully nurtured. Its pledge is to creativity, independence and the people who represent this.”
