Study: Amazon dominates U.S. smartphone shoppers

4/22/2015

Seattle - While Amazon is winning the battle for smartphone shoppers in America, it has yet to achieve the same dominance in at least 10 other countries internationally. This is the key finding of a monthly report from Informate Mobile Intelligence that tracked and measured consumer use of smartphones in 12 countries during February 2015.

The new report reveals shopping apps as having the highest penetration in the U.S. at 60%, followed by India at 46%. The other 10 countries measured, by comparison, only had a median reach of about 18%.

Amazon's reach among American consumers was 34%, more than the combined reach of the number two and three ranked shopping apps – Walmart and eBay. Yet, in 10 of the other 11 countries measured, Amazon has yet to show similar command as it competes with more local players. For example, Flipkart was the most used shopping app in India with a 27% reach, followed by Snapdeal at 19% and then Amazon at 12%.

During the month of February, the average American with a smartphone spent 93 minutes on shopping apps. India ranked second at 48 minutes. Women in the U.S. spent an average of 117 minutes accessing shopping apps during the month, compared to 68 minutes by U.S. men and 49 and 44 minutes respectively, by men and women in India.

Forty-eight percent of shoppers in the U.S. and 46% in India used mobile apps to make payments.

Google properties make up at least six of the top 10 smartphone apps accessed across all countries. Facebook properties, including Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram account for the rest.
