Staples strikes gold in Miami

Staples has upped its commitment to sustainability and renewable energy. In a first for the chain, it has received LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification for its store on Biscayne Boulevard, Miami. Staples’ Miami store addresses LEED standards in a variety of ways, including improved energy performance. A highly reflective roofing system contributes to the store’s increased efficiency while also reducing the “heat island effect,” which contributes to higher city temperatures.

Other sustainable features include:

• Indoor temperature controls that adjust based on occupancy load and external weather conditions for effective energy management and thermal comfort;
• Rainwater collected rooftop gutter systems, reducing the strain on municipal water and Florida aquifer reserves;
• Waterless urinals and low-flow toilets reduce water usage;
• Use of only low-emitting materials for adhesives, sealants, paints, coatings, carpet and other building products, contributing to superior indoor air quality;
• Use of 100% native plants and shrubs in landscaping to protect and restore habitats;
• Preservation of non-renewable, virgin resources by using drywall, steel, concrete, bathroom partitions, carpet and parking stops made from recycled materials during the construction process;
• Encourages alternative transportation by being located close to light rail and bus lines and offering changing facilities and bike racks; and
• On-site recycling facilities.
