Staples reinvents corporate culture with upgrades to HQ

9/23/2014

As part of its efforts to reinvent its business and culture, Staples has opened a health and fitness center at its global corporate headquarters, in Framingham, Massachusetts. It is the latest in a series of updates to the campus, including a cafeteria stocked with healthier food options and a more open and collaborative floor plan, both designed by Business Interiors by Staples.

“The health and well-being of Staples associates is paramount to the company’s success,” said John Burke, chief culture officer, Staples. “We’re investing in our greatest asset, our associates, to make sure they have a world-class work environment and the resources they need to feel fit and energized.”

The health and fitness center is 9,500 sq. ft., and is professionally staffed and managed by Plus One Health Management. The smoke-free campus features an outdoor terrace and lawn area right outside of the fitness center, where employees work, eat, engage in team-building and stay physically fit with activities like the Boot Camp training and 5k races. The terrace abuts the corporate headquarters parking garage, which has a previously announced a 685 kilowatt solar power installation, as well as electric vehicle charging, a sign of Staples’ commitment to sustainability.

Staples also announced the creation of the Staples Share Fund, a 501(C)(3) nonprofit organization founded and funded by associate and corporate contributions, which offers relief for Staples associates in need of financial assistance due to events such as natural disasters, catastrophic events or other circumstances beyond their control. Staples promises to match contributions up to $1 million, which has already been used to provide relief to dozens of associates affected by severe weather and personal tragedy, and associates can continue to contribute by signing up for payroll deduction or making a one-time donation.

“The Staples Share Fund is another way for our associates to be able to help out their co-workers in their time of need, and make a difference in the Staples community, something Staples employees are always looking to do,” Burke said.
