Staples names new head of North American retail

Staples Inc.is looking north of the border for an executive to lead its North American operations.



The office supply giant is promoting Steve Matyas to president of North American retail. Matyas had previously served as president of Staples Canada/Bureau en Gros since July 2000, and will continue to serve as a member of the company’s executive committee.



“Steve has over 25 years of deep experience leading Staples Canada, and a proven track record of delivering profitable growth and innovation,” said Shira Goodman, interim CEO of Staples Inc. “Realigning our retail leadership will strengthen our position as we continue to right size our store network and evolve to meet the changing needs of business customers.”



Matyas joined Staples Canada precursor Business Depot Ltd. in Canada as its first employee in March 1991. He has also served Staples Canada as VP, operations, HR and store planning, as well as VP, sales and operations.
