Stand-alone Borders Paperchase opens in U.S.

10/18/2007

ANN ARBOR, Mich. Borders announced today that it is opening its first stand-alone Paperchase shop in the U.S. Oct. 24 on Boston's Newbury Street.

Borders acquired Paperchase Products Limited, the parent company of the popular London-based stationery chain, in 2004. Currently, their are more than 100 Paperchase stores in the United Kingdom.

Since 2004, Paperchase shops have been added to over 300 Borders superstores throughout the U.S., and the company has committed to further expansion of the brand here in Borders superstores as well as through larger, stand-alone stores as part of its long- range strategic plan.

According to Borders the stand-alone shop in Boston will offer a unique collection of high-design greeting cards, stationery, gift items, seasonal decor, gift wrap, diaries and more, which will be continually updated to reflect trends, the seasons, and specific holidays.

"Paperchase is an exciting, fashion-driven brand unlike anything that exists today in the U.S.," said Borders Group ceo George Jones. "The incredible depth of the Paperchase product line, combined with its 'of-the-moment' graphic designs, make for a unique shopping experience that fills a retail void in the U.S. As we continue to open Paperchase shops in Borders stores and break ground for more of the larger, stand-alone stores over the coming months and years, we are confident that Paperchase will add greatly to our company's overall competitiveness. We are thrilled to be taking this step with the first U.S. stand-alone store because it is key to establishing Paperchase as a true global brand."

Borders said it plans to open an additional five to eight stand-alone Paperchase stores in the U.S. by the end of fiscal 2008, but is not yet releasing specific retail locations. As leases for these locations are signed, public announcements will be made by the company.
