SPECS Profile

9/30/2015

The first in a series of interviews with retail executives who attend SPECS, Chain Store Age’s annual store planning conference.

Why do you attend SPECS each year?

To be honest, in the early years, SPECS was really just a trade show to me. But I soon realized that it was more than that. It really worked!

From the first vendor contact, I knew that SPECS could benefit me professionally. And not long after that, I realized how important SPECS was to the industry. It became my “trade show of choice” and I got more and more involved. I have enjoyed being a part of the Advisory Board for a number of years as well.

What year did you attend your very first SPECS?

My first SPECS show was 1991. My boss at the time invited me, saying that it was a way to network with my peers. It turned out to be that and much more.

What is typically your greatest takeaway from the conference?

Every year I meet at least one new industry peer or vendor. Some have become longtime business partners and friends.

What has been your favorite session in recent years, and why?

It is hard to pick just one, but I do admit that I enjoy the more lighthearted sessions, like Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune. They are especially welcome late in the day!

Also, the tech sessions are always great. Everyone needs to be on the leading edge of technology. It changes so quickly. I also like the face-to-face sessions for meeting prospective vendors and suppliers.

Who was your most memorable keynote speaker?

Hands down, it was President George Bush at the 50th Anniversary show. I was also lucky enough to meet him and spend some time with him. That was a thrill.

Have you made meaningful connections at SPECS?

I have made many meaningful connections, both contractors and vendors. Many are still business partners today. I have also made lots of friends over the years, and reconnected with some old ones.

Would you recommend SPECS to your industry peers?

Not only would I recommend SPECS, I have recommended SPECS to my peers. And I will continue to do so.

Have you received actionable information at the show?

Absolutely! Between the sessions and the exhibit floor, there have been numerous takeaways that I have been able to apply in my own business world.

Do you use the networking opportunities?

I do, because I believe that these are important to cultivate the relationships that are made on the exhibit floor or in the sessions. I particularly enjoy the evening receptions. When you are able to get to know someone in a casual setting, it takes the pressure off and allows people to meet you at your own level.
