ShopperTrak: July 2013

8/9/2013

Total U.S. Shopper Traffic in Retail Stores and Malls for July 2013

Shopper activity increased last month, as ShopperTrak anticipated. Retail foot traffic increased 5.2% in July compared to June 2013. This is in line with recently reported positive month-over-month retail trends. However, foot traffic for July 2013 dropped compared to the same month in 2012 — with a decrease of 2.3%.

Compared to the previous month, July saw warmer temperatures and one additional shopping day on the calendar. These two factors accounted for some of the gain in month-over-month shopper traffic.

July’s hot temperatures in most parts of the country attracted consumers to stores for seasonal apparel and additional summer merchandise. While the Fourth of July doesn’t drive significant retail traffic, people often take vacation days near the holiday, enabling them to spend some of their free time shopping and preparing for Fourth of July festivities.

This year, retailers did not begin their back-to-school preparations and advertisements until the end of July. The later kick off of back-to-school promotions may have contributed to the decrease in July’s year-over-year traffic change.

“We saw a nice foot traffic increase this July, with warmer weather and Independence Day driving consumers in to stores,” said Bill Martin, ShopperTrak founder. “For August, we expect to see further traffic increases as parents prepare their children to head back to school.”
