San Francisco bans tobacco at pharmacies

7/30/2008

SAN FRANCISCO San Francisco voted to ban the sale of tobacco products at most pharmacies, making it the first city in the nation to do so. The ban targets pharmacies such as Walgreens and Rite Aid, but does not apply to warehouses or supermarkets.

According to reports, those in favor of the ban felt that is something consumers associate with health and therefor should not sell harmful products like tobacco. Those opposed felt that it unfairly singled out Walgreens and Rite Aid and would hurt business. In addition, supporters felt that the decision to purchase tobacco products should be up to the consumer.
