Safeway, NorCal unions reach agreement

PLEASANTON, Calif. Safeway and UFCW Northern California unions announced that they have reached an agreement.

The United Food and Commercial Workers Locals 5, 8, 101 and 648 have reached a four-year collective bargaining agreement with Safeway, covering the companys retail clerks, meat and deli personnel. According to Safeway, the unions will present the recommended settlement to their members for ratification in the coming weeks. Details of the settlements are being withheld by both the company and the unions until after ratification.

In a separate announcement, the presidents of the aforementioned unions said, We are pleased that we were able to reach this fine agreement. This model contract sets the standard for workers in the supermarket industry. Next we will focus our energies on bringing these benefits to non-union workers doing the same work for less, the presidents said.
