Safeway details green efforts in corporate social responsibility report

Pleasanton, Calif. Safeway has released its annual corporate social responsibility report, which provides details on its social responsibility efforts.

“We are proud of the reputation we have developed as a responsible steward of the planet and the communities we serve,” said Steve Burd, chairman, president and CEO. “Our report is an open and candid assessment of the advancements Safeway has made under the vast banner of corporate social responsibility.”

The report, entitled “The Heart of Safeway,” details the company’s progress in four key areas: community, planet, products and people.

The report highlights Safeway’s sustainability efforts and notes that the chain is one of the largest retail purchasers of wind energy. Safeway is currently building several stores designed to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification standards.

It also spotlights Safeway’s leadership role in pushing for healthcare reform. Burd is the founder of the Coalition to Advance Healthcare Reform, an organization of more than 60 leading employers and business leaders dedicated to advancing meaningful market-based solutions to the healthcare crisis.
