Report: Wal-Mart to Measure Energy Used in Supply Chain
New York City, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said it will begin to measure the energy used to create its products throughout its supply chain process, according to a report by MarketWatch.
Through a partnership with the non-profit Carbon Disclosure Project to help remove non-renewable energy, Wal-Mart plans to measure the greenhouse impact of its supply chain including buying, manufacturing and distribution, the report said.
A pilot plan with a group of suppliers will target seven categories that consumers commonly use—DVDs, toothpaste, soap, milk, beer, vacuum cleaners and soda—to study their environmental impact and come up with ways to drive energy efficiency, according to the report.
The agreement is part of Wal-Mart's “Sustainability 360” campaign. The company said earlier this year it plans to reduce packaging by 5% by 2013.
