Grand Rapids, Mich. – A rival Midwestern grocery chain is reportedly accusing regional mass merchandiser Meijer Inc. of offering unfairly low prices on grocery products. According to the Milwaukee Business Journal, Milwaukee-based law firm Gonzalez Saggio & Harlan has filed five complaints against Meijer from an unnamed client who is grocer with stores in Wisconsin.
The complaints allege that Meijer is violating the Wisconsin Unfair Sales Act, which sets minimum prices on grocery items. Meijer has acknowledged receiving notice of the complaints from the state. Three of the complaints have been investigated and closed, one is under investigation and one has been received.
The unnamed retailer has not decided if it will attempt to file a private lawsuit if the state chooses not to act. Meijer could potentially face fines of $50 to $500 for the first violation, and up to $2,500 for subsequent violations.
