Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) reportedly wants to expand a pilot of a grocery delivery service it has been testing with Amazon.com in the San Francisco area. According to the Wall Street Journal, the USPS has applied to run a two-year test of the service.
The current pilot with Amazon, which tests early morning deliveries of prepackaged grocery items, is set to expire in early October. The USPS wants to launch the new pilot as early as Oct. 24 in unidentified multiple metropolitan areas, with retailers other than Amazon. The new pilot could also test time periods besides early morning.
In a filing with the Postal Regulatory Commission, the USPS said a grocery delivery service could generate up to $10 million a year in revenue, and that wants to develop a long-term, scalable delivery solution. The Commission will seek public comment before issuing a ruling.
