Report: Nasty Gal closing stores

2/15/2017

The formerly high-flying Nasty Gal has been brought down to earth — and not in a good way.

The bankrupt fashion retailer will close its two Los Angeles-area stores by the end of February, the Wall Street Journal reported.

On Feb. 8, U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Central District of California approved the sale of Nasty Gal’s intellectual property and customer database to British online fashion retailer Boohoo.com, which is seeking to speed up its expansion in the United States.

The $20 million transaction is expected to be completed on Feb. 28.

In a filing with the court, Nasty Gal sought permission to end the leases for its West Hollywood and Santa Monica stores.

Nasty Gal has also notified the employees at its distribution center in Shepherdsville, Kentucky, of upcoming layoffs related to the sale of the brand, according to the report.

Boohoo is paying $20 million for the brand as it seeks faster expansion in the key U.S. market.
