Report: Home Depot shutting down Spanish-language Web site

5/4/2009

New York City The Home Depot will shut down the Spanish-language version of its Web site Thursday due to disappointing sales and site visits, the Wall Street Journal reported. The site was launched approximately four months ago.

The retailer found that half of the visitors to the site, which replicated the company’s English language e-commerce site, were from countries other than the United States.

“They were not customers or even potential customers, because we did not have stores there and we don’t ship out of the country,” said Home Depot spokesman Ron Defeo, according to the report.

The Spanish-language site was part of a larger initiative by Home Depot to cater to Hispanics. The company said it is still committed to serving the Spanish-speaking community and will shift its focus to adding more bilingual signs in its stores and hiring more bilingual sales associates.
