Report: E-Commerce Growth Slows

8/25/2008

Dallas Shoppers are spending less money online compared to last year, as U.S. retailers have reported smaller Web sales gains, according to the Dallas Business Journal.

The U.S. Census Bureau reported last week that e-commerce sales only increased 9.5% in the second quarter. This marks the first time since the bureau began recording the medium’s growth rates that the quarterly increase didn't hit double digits. The bureau began recording these growth rates in 1999.

Forrester Research retail analyst Sucharita Mulpuru forecasts a 17% increase for online sales this year, the report said. This is compared to last year's 21% increase. Overall, Forrester estimates online sales will hit just over $200 billion this year.

Online sales continue to grow at a faster rate than bricks-and-mortar sales, but some retailers' Internet revenue gains are still decelerating, Mulpuru told the publication.
