Report: D.C. raises minimum wage to $11.50 in 2016

Washington, D.C. – The Washington, D.C., city council has reportedly unanimously approved an increase in the city’s minimum wage to $11.50 per hour in 2016, up from the current hourly rate of $8.25. According to Reuters, after being raised to $11.50 the minimum wage would then be indexed to inflation.



Washington, D.C., Mayor Vincent Gray has publicly disagreed with the measure, recommending an increase to $10 per hour instead, but a unanimous council vote would overrule a veto. The city council has also reportedly discussed creating a coordinated minimum wage increase with lawmakers in Maryland’s Montgomery and Prince George's counties. Reuters says this would create a region of 2.5 million residents with the nation’s highest minimum wage.
