Report: Costco Manhattan plan met with opposition
NEW YORK According to reports in the New York press, Costco is planning to open a store on the West Side of Manhattan. The planned store will be 150,000-square feet in size and include 2,300 parking spaces.
The planned Costco store has been met with opposition from various groups including elected officials and labor unions, who are seeking to block the opening of the store. Wal-Mart was met with similar opposition for its plans to open in Manhattan.
The argument most city officials reportedly have given for not wanting the Costco revolves around transportation and a fear that the store would increase traffic in an already congested city. However, others argue that the revenue the store can generated is badly needed in this difficult economic time.
Costco already operates stores in Brooklyn and Queens.
