Regional pet retailer fights big dogs

9/19/2014

Undeterred by pet specialty heavyweights PetSmart and Petco, Pet Supermarket just opened its 150th location and has plans for more.

The forty year old Sunrise, Fla.-based company recently opened its 150th location in the central Florida town of Bartow and indicated it plans additional growth while stopping short of providing a specific expansion target. The company’s stores measure about 7,500-sq.-ft. and are currently concentrated in states such as Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Kentucky, California and Nevada.

“Our continued expansion and store openings are not only a reflection of our corporate team, but also our dedicated associates, vendor relationships and organizations that have provided support. Especially, we’d like to thank our loyal customers who continue to choose our stores to keep their pets happy and healthy,” said Pet Supermarket president and CEO Diane Holtz.

Steve Feinberg, SVP of merchandise and marketing contends the Pet Supermarket stores and business model are unique which enables the company to be successful.

“This allows us to open successful stores and serve a customer base our competition simply can’t,” Feinberg said.

For example, neither PetSmart or Petco operates stores in the community of Bartow. In the press release announcing Pet Supermarket’s newest stores, the retailer put the real estate community on notice that it is interested in opportunities in the states and markets it currently serves as well as others.
