New York City, American consumers took a vacation from retail stores during the month of August, according to Britt Beemer, founder and chairman of America’s Research Group. Back-to-school retailers emerged as big winners, based on the group’s Consumer Mind Reader survey, while home-improvement and auto-parts setors saw significant drops.
