RadioShack gets ‘weird’ for the holidays
Eighties sensation Weird Al Yankovic is offering RadioShack a new hope for the holidays.
Yankovic is appearing in the chain's holiday ad campaign called "Gift Smart.” In the ad, he sings his own unique take on the holiday song “Toyland.”
"He's tech-savvy, smart and a social media guru," said RadioShack chief marketing officer Jennifer Warren. Yankovich has more than 3.5 million Twitter followers and 1.6 million Facebook fans. "I don't think there could be a better fit for our brand right now."
These are tough times at RadioShack. In September, the company warned investors that it was running out of cash and might have to seek bankruptcy-court protection from creditors if it couldn't raise sufficient funds. It has since found some investors, including hedge fund Standard General LP, to infuse cash and give it a little financial breathing room. But the clock is ticking and it has, arguably, never faced a more critical holiday than this one.
RadioShack's global retail network currently includes more than 4,400 company-operated stores in the United States and Mexico and more than 1,200 dealer stores in 25 countries.
