Publix earns award for sustainability
LAKELAND, Fla. Publix announced today that it received the Sustainable Large Business Best Practice Award from the Council for Sustainable Florida for its efforts to promote conservation, waste reduction, hurricane preparedness as well as other programs that support the environment.
Publix said that certain programs that attributed to its winning the award include Get into a Green routine, which was launched in 2002 and has lead the company in reducing electricity usage by an average of 7%; the publix generator program, which provides 670 stores with stationary and mobile generators to aid them in the case of a storm; and Publix's reduce-and-reuse before recycling program, where plastic is re-used for the shipping of product.
"As a Florida-based retailer, we are focused on the sustainability of our state and protecting resources," said Maria Brous, Publix director of media and community relations.
