Orlando tragedy is personal for Target

6/15/2016

Target Corp. is donating $250,000 to the OneOrlando Fund in honor of the retailer's two associates and other victims killed in the nightclub massacre that occurred early Sunday morning in Orlando, Florida.

Target lost two employees, Mercedes Flores and Luis Omar Ocasio-Capo, in the mass shootings. Flores was a Target employee for eight years, and Ocasio-Capo for two years. A third Target employee remains in critical condition.

The OneOrlando Fund was established by Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer. The fund will go to nonprofit organizations serving victims, their families and the community.

“We were devastated to hear the news of the horrific event in Orlando, made even more personal by the tragic loss of two of our own team members,” said Brian Cornell, CEO, Target. “I want to personally thank the local Target team in Orlando for pulling together during an incredibly difficult and emotional time to do everything they can to help the community.”

Cornell added he was overwhelmed by the response of Target associates across the country who observed a moment of silence on June 14 in honor of all the victims.

Beginning in the early hours of Sunday morning, Target teams across Orlando donated food and water to first responders as well as those waiting in line to give blood to help survivors. The chain also provided a space at a nearby store to help law enforcement establish a command center.

“Orlando, Target stands with you. Mercedez and Omar, we will not forget you,” Target said in a posting on its website.
