Online orders set record at Walmart.com

12/2/2014

Walmart’s efforts to better integrate physical and digital appear to be gaining traction judging from key disclosures the company made regarding online activity.

Cyber Monday transaction volume set a new record at Walmart.com and throughout the five day period running from Thanksgiving Day through Cyber Monday the company said it experienced more than 1.5 billion page views. During the same period, mobile accounted for approximately 70 percent of traffic to Walmart.com.

“We worked hard to bring amazing deals to our customers on Cyber Monday and they responded by driving our Cyber Monday volume to a new all-time high,” said Fernando Madeira, president and CEO, Walmart.com.

Aiding in the order volume this year was an offering of 100 Cyber Monday specials that were available for same-day pick-up in store. It was Walmart’s biggest day ever for same-day pickup with orders increasing 70 percent compared to last year. Another contributing factor to the volume was a staggered approach to offers which resulted in a surge in traffic Monday night when Walmart offered its Cyber Monday Evening Edition.

Details Walmart shared about Cyber Monday followed selective disclosure the company offered regarding Black Friday activities. More than 25 million people downloaded Walmart’s Black Friday ad and 20 million shoppers used the local store maps functionality at Walmart.com, according to the company. Online shopping on Thanksgiving this year was second only to Black Friday last year, according to the company.
