Online giant expands presence in Vancouver

HQ2 is not the only new corporate office Amazon is planning.

The online giant also plans to open a new business office in downtown Vancouver — it’s second in the province. The new office is scheduled to open in 2020.

Attracted to the province’s burgeoning local tech workforce, Amazon expects the new office to create 1,000 new jobs, a move that will double the city’s workforce to 2,000 employees. The new operation will augment its current Canadian workforce, which has grown to over 5,000 full-time, full-benefit employees across the country, according to Amazon.

These employees hold positions within its Vancouver office, at its fulfillment centers in Delta and New Westminster, BC, and within its subsidiary abebooks.com, based in Victoria, BC.

Amazon reported that the Vancouver expansion has been in the works for some time, and it’s not related to the anticipated opening of its second headquarters, called HQ2, according to Reuters.

Amazon’s plan to establish a second headquarters, a $5 billion investment, attracted 238 bids from cities and regions in 54 states, provinces, districts and territories across North America — all hoping to be selected as HQ2’s new hometown. Amazon will announce its decision in 2018.
