Oakland Whole Foods inspired by international market halls

9/26/2007

EMERYVILLE, Calif. Whole Foods Market introduced a new store layout with the opening of its new store in Oakland, Calif. today. According to the company, the store design is unlike typical supermarkets, or even Whole Foods Market stores, and instead features its own market hall design.

Inspired by international market halls including ones in Berlin, Vancouver and Maine, the Oakland store will focus on convenience and shopping ease and reflect local pride in its design, Whole Foods said.

"The store was designed specifically for the progressive, food-sophisticated, dynamic and diverse culture of Oakland and the surrounding communities," says Anthony Gilmore, president Whole Foods Market Northern California. "We have also added culinary features we think customers will find fun and exciting, including a dine-in venue called Market Bistro, and a "Fresh and Wild" station featuring a juice bar, salads and other lighter fare. We have always been committed to supporting local growers and food producers and are thrilled to be featuring Oakland favorites Everett & Jones and Gelateria Naia gelato right in our store."

Aside from the Market Bistro, which offers made-to-order foods, the new store includes an Asian Express Island, which offers made-on-site sushi, and a full-service coffee bar.
