1/13/2009

Albany, N.Y. A Kmart store in Glenmont, N.Y., will close after company officials chose not to renew its lease. Nearly 100 employees are affected.

Kmart, a subsidiary of Sears Holdings Corp., told the state Department of Labor on Monday that it planned to close the store. Paperwork filed with the state cited “economic” concerns, and indicated that as many as 90 people will lose their jobs.

In other store-closing news, The Bon-Ton Stores, Inc. announced that it is closing a store in Hamilton, Ohio. The York, Pa.-based retailer said Tuesday that it will close its 167,900-sq.-ft. Elder-Beerman store, impacting approximately 75 associates. The location is scheduled to close by mid-March.

The company said the affected associates will be provided an opportunity to consider available opportunities at other stores or receive career transition benefits, including severance, according to established practices and state employment service support.
