New top cop working Walmart international beat
Walmart this week named Daniel Trujillo to the newly created position of SVP and chief compliance officer for its international division, according to a Wall Street Journal report based on an internal company memo.
The appointment comes amid a lengthy, ongoing and costly federal investigation into allegations of bribery at Walmart’s Mexican susbsidiary. Trujillo, 42, is currently deputy general counsel and director of compliance at the oil field services company Schlumberger.
"Walmart is committed to having strong and effective compliance programs around the world," according to a comment the Journal attributed to Walmart spokesman David Tovar. "Over the past 18 months, we have made improvements to our global compliance programs and have taken a number of specific, concrete actions with respect to our processes, procedures and people. Today’s announcement is consistent with our ongoing efforts."
The new position reflects an effort to centralize compliance controls which previously were organized on a regional level, according to the Journal report. Trujillo is a native of Argentina who is said to speak five languages and has worked in Schlumberger’s legal department since 1997 and prior to that as an internal legal counsel at Cargill.
