Magazines may go missing from store shelves

10/8/2007

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. Popular consumer magazines may soon be missing from store shelves, due to a dispute over the costs related to a change in the handling of magazine sales, according to reports.

The possible removal of the magazines is reportedly due to Anderson News', a distribution company, attempt to place more of the cost on the publisher, instead of the retailer. Moving to scan-based trading, retailers would only have to pay for the issues they sell, instead of buying in bulk.

According to reports, many large publishing companies, including Time Warner, which publishes well-known titles such as Fortune, People and Vogue, have threatened to cut ties with the distribution company, which could lead to the dissapearance of magazines from retailer shelves.
