Longs reports quarterly sales gain

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. Longs Drug Stores today reported preliminary total retail drug store sales from continuing operations of $360 million for the four-week period ended Aug. 23, an increase of 3.4% from $348 million in the comparable period a year ago.

The company reported that total same-store sales for the quarter increased 2.2%, compared to a 1.6% increase last year. Pharmacy same-store sales rose 3.3%, compared to 2.5% last year. Front-end same-store sales rose 1.1%, compared to 0.7% last year.
