Loblaw paves way for bagless checkouts

8/31/2007

MILTON, Ontario The new Loblaw Superstore in Milton, Ontario will be the first major grocery and general merchandise retail store in North America not to offer traditional plastic grocery bags at checkout, according to the company.

The move is part of Loblaw Companies Limited's initiative to reduce 1 billion plastic grocery bags from Canada's landfills within one year.

"As Canada's largest grocery retailer, we have a responsibility to help reduce waste in our communities" says Galen Weston, executive chairman of Loblaw Companies Limited. "Opening this store with bagless checkouts is another concrete step in the right direction."
