Licensing royalties top $6 billion in '06

NEW YORK The release of 2006 industry statistics and an appearance by the star of Disney’s Hannah Montana were some of the highlights of opening day of Licensing International 2007 at the Jacob Javits Center in New York June 19.

The Licensing Industry Merchandisers Association reported that licensing royalties inched up 1.5% to $6.04 billion in 2006. As usual, entertainment-based properties led the way with 44% of the market followed by trademarks and brands with 18%. Apparel was the leading product category with 17% of the market and toys were a close second with a 15% share.

Disney Consumer Products reported that retail sales of product from Disney and its licensees is on track to hit $26 billion in fiscal 2007, more than double the $13 billion generated in 2002. And Miley Cyrus, the star of Disney’s Hannah Montana, appeared at the show to promote her new CD and an expanded line of products based on the TV series including youth electronics and footwear.   

The organizers of the licensing show are expecting a record turnout of more than 23,000 for the three-day event that ends June 21.
