Kmart store robbed, sensitive electronic info compromised

4/23/2013

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. — An armed robber allegedly stole sensitive electronic information on pharmacy customers from a Kmart store in Little Rock, Ark., last month, the mass merchandise retailer said.

Kmart, owned by Sears Holdings, said an armed person entered the store at closing time and demanded all the money and other items stored in the locked safe. These included electronic media that backed up the pharmacy's computer system and contained information related to prior customer prescriptions, including full names, addresses, dates of birth, prescription numbers, prescribers, insurance cardholder IDs and drug names, as well as some Social Security numbers.

The company said the incident was quickly reported to local law enforcement and submitted written notification to all affected customers last week, but none of the valuables have been recovered to date.
