Kids’ wear takes cues from parents’ closets

3/17/2008

The MAGIC Kids’ fashion show in Las Vegas demonstrated that kids’ wear designs are running parallel to the styles created for adults. Much like the men’s and women’s runway shows, the kids’ collections used inspiration from frontrunner trends like western frontier and eco-fashion.

This fall, expect to see apparel fit for any occasion, from back-to-school hoodies, flannels and tees to rocker styles to nature-derived fashions. Early fall is welcomed with casual wear that focuses on details that are subtle, but have a ‘cool’ factor, such as light fringe on logos or contrasting panel lining. The prairie look has returned as well in girls’ collections. Ruffles and small flower patterns create mellow, delicate silhouettes. As the weather cools, the mountaineer look will be very strong. Chunky knit sweaters, Sherpa-lined jackets and buffalo plaid will bring out a lumberjack attitude.

Retailers will also see old fashioned and world traveler notes. Expect to see very earth tones—indigo blues, olive greens, sienna reds and rustic oranges. Bohemian styles will take inspiration from African, Asian and Indian designs that will transition well from lighter fabrics to sturdier knits.

For girls, the cropped cardigan is very important in knitwear, noted Angela Ringo, trends forecaster for Stylesight, especially because it pairs well with A-line dresses. Although the shape of the dress is simple, designs will be spruced up with fringe and applique. Separates are also important: blouses with empire waists and ruffled sleeves or hems; bubble shorts in laundered, super soft denim; and tiered skirts flash back in time. Watch out for eyelette fabric, as it will be quite popular.

Boys’ fashion will continue to see a strong affinity for the cargo pant and short, continued Ringo. “I feel that it’s never going to go away,” she added. Layers continue to be important as well, and are updated with detail-driven apparel with drawstrings and vents. A staple in any wardrobe, the tee is getting a slight makeover by using two layers, often in contrasting colors.

Although the trends are forecasted, it’s a bit early to predict how the back-to-school season will pan out. Craig R. Johnson, president of Consumer Growth Partners, foresees a slow season due to a guarded economy and parents heavily weighing premium merchandise with good value. “When you think of this age market, a lot of focus is on the Kohl’s of the world,” he said. “Wal-Mart is doing a better job with apparel, too; kids’ wear can be competitive and younger parents are looking for value.”

Kohl’s new children’s line Jumping Beans, Target, TJX and Ross Stores will attract shoppers, as will specialty retailers like abercrombie (kids) and the new line of kids’ wear from American Eagle.
