Jet beats Walmart and Amazon on launch day

7/22/2015

Online retailer Jet.com is all about low prices and so far the upstart membership club competitor is living up to it value proposition.

A pricing analysis conducted by e-commerce intelligence provider Profitero looked at 16,028 identical items across seven categories on Jet.com, Amazon.com and Walmart.com. The firm determined that on exactly-matched products, Jet.com was priced an average of 9% lower than Amazon.com and 6% lower than Walmart.com. Jet.com’s pricing was slightly closer to its competitors in higher-priced categories. The analysis was conducted on July 21, the date of Jet.com’s official launch.

The single digit price differential would like become more meaningful except Profitero’s analysis did not take into account extra discounts shoppers are able to receive on Jet.com by combining orders, adding additional items to their cart or foregoing returns.

Of the seven categories examined (baby, beauty, electronics, grocery, household, office supplies and pet supplies) the only category where Jet.com wasn’t the lowest was grocery. In that area, Walmart.com beat Jet.com by 2%.
