It’s ‘Digital Monday’ at Meijer

11/26/2014

Meijer is taking a different approach to Cyber Monday this year.

Instead of online sales, the retailer says it will focus on offering discounts through its digital couponing site: mPerks. For Cyber Monday, the retailer is offering a coupon for 20% off a single item through mPerks on in-store purchases today only.

"More than 30% of our current sales are digitally-enabled, so many of our customers have sent a message that they are shifting from cyberspace to the digital space," said Peter Whitsett, executive vice president of merchandising for Meijer. "Our mPerks program has more than three million subscribers, and those customers have a great opportunity to save a lot of money inside our stores on what has traditionally been an online shopping day."

The promotion includes a 20% off coupon through mPerks that can be used on one electronics, apparel or general merchandise item. Meijer credit card customers, who have a 15% off reward coupon, can use it in addition to the mPerks promotion for even more savings. This is the largest percentage off coupon ever offered through mPerks and the first time an mPerks promotion has been offered on a Monday.

Meijer hasn’t been taking online orders since most of its website was taken down earlier this year for a redesign. The results are expected to be unveiled after the holidays.

"Our customers who used Meijer.com for online purchases have been very patient," Whitsett said. "We're excited about the changes coming online and we'll be able to share more about our new Meijer.com offering in the coming weeks."

Cyber Monday, which is considered the capstone shopping day to Black Friday weekend, is expected to draw 130 million shoppers this year, according to estimates by the National Retail Federation. Meijer operates 213 supercenters and grocery stores throughout Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky.
