Investor: Borders should consider deal with Amazon

6/13/2008

NEW YORK William Ackerman, whose hedge fund owns about 30% of Borders Group, reportedly said the book retailer should consider a possible deal with Amazon.com.

Ackerman said that Borders, which was up for sale as of March, could add the bricks-and-mortar element to Amazon's sales strategy. Borders has about 500 retail stores in the United States.

Amazon stands to lose its state tax advantage as more states are starting to require e-commerce businesses to collect sales tax. According to reports, Ackerman said that because of this it would make sense for Amazon to consider a deal with Borders.
