Hong Kong Supermarkets to acquire Super 88 Market

Boston A Thursday report in the Boston Globe said New York City-based Hong Kong Supermarkets purchased a struggling Boston-based chain of Asian supermarkets.

An official with the 10-store Hong Kong Supermarkets told the Globe the company has acquired Super 88 Market for an undisclosed price.

Super 88, founded 30 years ago by a Vietnamese immigrant, closed three of its six stores last year and cut back inventory in others. The company has faced increased competition from newer Asian markets along with conventional grocery stores that have expanded their ethnic fare.
