Home Depot deals with data breach aftermath
Several Home Depot customers have filed a class action lawsuit in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, Atlanta Division, alleging that Home Depot failed to meet its legal obligation to protect their credit card and personal information and failed to timely warn them that such information had been stolen or that the security and privacy of such information had been compromised.
The complaint alleges that in late April or early May 2014, computer hackers gained access to Home Depot's point of sale data network and stole the personal and financial information of hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of Home Depot's customers. It further alleges that Home Depot did not tell its customers about the security breach right away, and suggests that the breach was only recently brought to light by a computer security blogger called Brian Krebs in a blog post dated Sept. 2.
On behalf of themselves and all class members, plaintiffs seek injunctive relief and damages suffered by class members as a result of Home Depot's actions, including for Home Depot's alleged violation of 38 States' data breach statutes.
