Havertys reports Q1 loss

Atlanta Haverty Furniture Co. reported a loss for its first quarter ended March 31 of $7.3 million, compared with its first quarter net earnings of $1.0 million last year.

As previously reported, net sales for first quarter 2009 were $144.2 million, down 22.1% compared with sales of $185.3 million for the same quarter last year. Same-store sales declined 22.9% for the quarter.

The company opened a new store in Little Rock, Ark. on May 1, completing its strategy of strengthening its position in that market with one new location from two older stores.
