Haverty profit up in Q3

Atlanta Haverty Furniture Cos. reported a net income of $501,000 in its third quarter, compared with a net loss of $1.5 million in the same period last year, due in part to cost cuts.

Third-quarter sales fell 13.5% to $151.9 million.

“The results reflect the considerable effort and difficult decisions that have been made by the Haverty team over the past few quarters,” said Clarence H. Smith, president and CEO. “Cost controls and improvements across all facets of our business have led to leaner and more agile operating structures.”

The company cut its total expenses 16% to $78.7 million in the third quarter.

Haverty has 121 showrooms in 17 states in the South and Midwest.
