Harris Teeter to Buy Nine Winn-Dixie Stores
Matthews, N.C., Harris Teeter Inc. has agreed to buy nine supermarkets in North Carolina from a subsidiary of Winn-Dixie Stores Inc. Under the terms of the agreement, Harris Teeter will purchase the leasehold interests in the supermarkets for $16.75 million. The deal is expected to close in August, pending approval by the court handling Winn-Dixie’s bankruptcy proceedings. Harris Teeter, which is a subsidiary of Ruddick Corp., plans to remodel the stores.
Last month, Jacksonville, Fla.-based Winn-Dixie said it would close 326 stores and lay off 22,000 workers companywide.
