Groupon hits sales milestone

2/26/2016

Online deal provider Groupon has joined an elite group – companies that have sold one billion products.

In Groupon’s case, the product is also known as a “Groupon,” or a limited-time, localized online promotion. It took Groupon, which launched in October 2008, roughly seven-and-a-half years to reach the billion-Groupon mark.

The billionth Groupon sold was an $11 for $20 promotion for pizza and Italian food at Pirrone’s Pizzeria in the St. Louis area. Pirrone’s Pizza will receive $10,000 from Groupon, while the customer who purchased the deal will receive a year of free local Groupons.

Groupon assembled some interesting statistics about the deals it has sold during the years, including:

· Twenty-three miles of burgers stacked.

· Five-hundred-two years of yoga poses held.

· Four million body hair removals, resulting in two trillion hair follicles stripped.

· One-hundred-thirty-four million bowling balls thrown, which is equal to the entire populations of California, Texas, Florida, New York, Illinois and Pennsylvania combined.

· Nearly $20 billion in savings to consumers and more than $7 billion circulated into local businesses and communities in North America.

“We’re thrilled and humbled to join the select group of brands and names in the billion-sold club,” said Groupon CEO Rich Williams. “We owe a huge thank you to our amazing merchants who’ve entrusted us to promote their business and our loyal customers who’ve made us part of their daily routine when discovering the best businesses in their neighborhood.”
