Is Groupon headed for a resurgence?
Despite increasing competition from Amazon Local and Google Shopping, Groupon announced Tuesday that its holiday weekend sales set a new record.
For the full Black Friday through Cyber Monday weekend, the e-commerce site’s North American sales climbed over 25 percent from last year, the company reported. This year's Black Friday and Cyber Monday were the two biggest days in Groupon's North American history, the firm said.
Products from categories such as electronics, household items and jewelry were some of the top sellers in the Groupon marketplace over the four-day holiday weekend, the company said. Groupon also saw a high volume of promo code redemptions for top retailers and brands such as Best Buy, Macy's, Nike and Walmart.
Groupon has taken a beating on Wall Street over the past year; its stock has plunged 36% in 2014 due to poor earnings growth, weak guidance and rising competition.
In May, Groupon introduced Gnome, an "iPad as a register" platform (similar to Square Register and Amazon Local Register) to establish a presence among brick-and-mortar retailers. In October, it launched thousands of business pages to take on Yelp, Facebook and Google.
