Grocery shoppers seek good value for less

12/17/2007

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. When it comes to choosing a grocery, consumers look for good value and high quality.

According to a study by Nielsen, 60% of U.S. consumers said that good value was the most important consideration in choosing a grocery. The study also found that the availability of high quality products and convenience of location were also top factors in choosing a supermarket.

“This is a perfect example of today’s conflicted shopper,” said Todd Hale, senior vp of consumer and shopping insights for Nielsen Consumer Panel Services. “Demanding shoppers expect the best of both worlds from retailers today. On one hand, we’re all natural bargain hunters and insist on good value for our grocery dollar, and on the other hand, we expect retailers to stock a wide selection of high quality brands and products so we can indulge in our favorite premium treats. Consumers want the ‘cheapest of the cheap’ in some categories and the ‘best of the best’ in others.”
