Google to test mobile-payment system with Verifone

3/16/2011

San Francisco -- A Wednesday report by Bloomberg said that Google plans to start testing a mobile-payment service at stores in New York and San Francisco within four months.

Citing unnamed sources, Bloomberg said Google will pay to install thousands of special cash-register systems from VeriFone Systems at merchant locations. The plans haven’t yet been made public.

ViVOtech, a provider of mobile-payment technology, will also play a role in the tests, which will include Los Angeles, Chicago and Washington, D.C., one of Bloomberg’s sources said. The registers would accept payments from mobile phones equipped to take payments via NFC technology.
